Our Board

At FoCMC, we believe we are our own assets and that we have the power to catalyze and facilitate. We believe that we can create spaces to discover and pursue opportunities that unite to achieve the outcomes we want for our families. We believe in harnessing our potential to decide for ourselves how to use the personal and interpersonal resources at our disposal to support our family's needs.

Collective Decision-Making

Nonprofit structures aren’t terribly different from corporate structures. Hierarchy exists on a nonprofit’s board and staff, and top-down decisions are often made that leave out staff and community members. This is detrimental because executive directors and board presidents typically don’t come from the historically oppressed communities they serve and may not understand their needs. Nonprofit staff not in leadership positions are more likely to hail from marginalized communities, and our opinions are just as valuable as our managers. We have the right to be a part of major decisions at our workplaces.

Expanding & Strengthening

It often feels as though we’re starting from scratch rather than expanding or strengthening our organizations and networks. There are many reasons why groups don’t last. Most of us are working and living in precarious circumstances that produce isolation and disorganization. Beyond our material circumstances, it may be that movements also have difficulty being good spaces for people to stick around.
